The importance of aerating your lawn

Sep 8, 2014 | Lawn Care Concerns, Seasonal Lawn Care and Information, Uncategorized

Aerating your lawn means to perforate the thatch or compacted soil with holes. This allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the roots of the grass creating a denser root system which ultimately makes for a stronger, more drought tolerant, lawn.

There are different types of aeration that are specific to the needs of your lawn. First are spike aeration and slicing, which are used with re-seeding. The next type is core aeration, which is used to relieve compaction and with top-dressing. Finally, there is verti-cutting which is for re-seeding and relieving compaction.

Aeration is best done during the cool seasons of fall and spring, except when aerating warm season grasses such as Zoysia and Bermuda grass which are best aerated during warmer months.

Does your lawn need aeration?

Most lawns can benefit from aeration to improve root growth and allow for the breakdown of thatch. Remember, when aeration occurs, the soil is being disturbed, which, while benefitting the existing grass, can also stimulate the growth of weeds. Seeding, along with aeration can be very helpful to ensure a thick stand of grass with less weeds.
